Talking politics in the workplace: Dos and don'ts

Democrats' blue tsunami and massive Republican losses in Tuesday's midterm elections are all anyone can talk about this week, but dishing your political hot takes at work comes with pitfalls. Driving the news: Axios Philadelphia chatted with Matt Levendusky , a political science and communication expert at Penn, who gave us his dos and don'ts for talking politics in the workplace — whether that's on Slack or around the water cooler. ☝️ Setting clear ground rules is essential. It's helpful to have guardrails around which topics can be discussed, tone and what's out of bounds. 👂 Understanding, not persuasion If you disagree with someone politically, focus on understanding their perspective rather than trying to convince them your side is correct. 🚶‍♂️ Walk away If a conversation is getting heated, bow out of it. 🤔 Worth it? Consider whether discussing politics at work is really necessary, especially with people you probably don't know very well. Pro tip: It often isn't worth it. 🛑 1 big no-no You don't always have to offer your opinion. "Sometimes, it's totally fine not to comment and to just not engage, especially if you aren't in the headspace to do so constructively," Levendusky says.

'I’ve put it all out there,' Shapiro says as he casts his ballot

(The Center Square) – Standing beside First Lady Lori, Gov. Josh Shapiro spoke with reporters after he cast his ballot in the 2026 midterm elections on Tuesday morning. Seeking a second term, Shapiro said it was a special day for him, noting he was able to vote with family and encouraged Pennsylvanians to get to the polls, too. “There is so much at stake,” he said at Rydal West Elementary School in Montgomery County. “I want to respectfully ask you for your vote for me for governor. And I want to respectfully ask you to exercise that power that you have to protect our democracy, protect our commonwealth, and our country, and use that power today for good and go vote.” Shapiro, a Montgomery County Democrat, was first elected governor in 2022 after twice serving as the state’s Attorney General. He’s facing Republican State Treasurer Stacy Garrity in the governor’s race on Tuesday. Throughout the campaign, polling has consistently shown Shapiro as the heavy favorite to win a second term, leading in almost all by double digits. The Cook Political Report , Sabato’s Crystal Ball , and Inside Elections , a trio of national ratings outlets, describe the race as

New park opens at former Cherry Hill swim club site

Nobody's splashing, but kids are having fun again at the former site of a Cherry Hill swim club. Kingston Park has opened on a nearly four-acre that once was the longtime home of Kingston Estates Swim Club, a gathering spot for area residents from 1957 to 2020. Cherry Hill spent $4.7 million to buy the site, demolish the club and build the recreation area over several budget years. The park includes separate play areas with cushioned surfaces for younger and older children at Deland and Princess avenues in the Kingston neighborhood. Preserved property: Cherry Hill farm returns to agricultural roots The property includes basketball courts, a street hockey rink, a walking path and a pavilion for community use, according to a statement from the township. In a sign of changing tastes in recreation, the park now has multiple cornhole boards. It does not retain some time-honored features of the swim club — like bocce and shuffleboard courts, ping pong tables, and a tetherball pole. One feature echoes the property's past. A concrete seal that served as Kingston Estates' mascot was removed and restored during the playground project. The seal is now positioned to greet visitors at the park's entrance. The
