A central Kentucky man has drowned near Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Daytona Beach News Journal reports 76-year-old Robert Sarver, of Lawrenceburg, died on Thursday at Dayton Beach Shores after possibly being caught in a rip current. Local officials said it is also possible Sarver, who was in the water with his grandson, suffered a medical episode while swimming.

Sarver was swimming in an area without a staffed lifeguard tower, Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue Deputy Chief Tammy Malphurs told the newspaper.

A witness told authorities that he saw Sarver floating face down in waist deep water. Initially, the witness thought Sarver was joking but as the witness approached the victim he saw he was unconscious.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

Sarver, according to his obituary, served as a guidance counselor for 32 years at Anderson County High School.
