I have been covering Cincinnati and Hamilton County for The Enquirer for 21 years, coming to The Enquirer in late 2002 to cover Hamilton County courts. As part of that job, I covered juvenile court. I got an up-close look at what was then called Hillcrest Training School, a beautiful tree-lined property in Springfield Township that seemed more boarding school than juvenile detention center. But that’s what it was. And more importantly, the program worked. I saw studies. I talked to kids who had been there, and I visited the property.
Ohio considers 2 new death penalty bills that would either end executions or restart them
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The Ohio Legislature is currently considering two new death penalty bills. One of those bills would allow executions to resume, the other would abolish them. The first bill would change the method of execution from lethal injection to gas. Currently, the state has halted executions because they can't secure the drugs used in lethal injections. If the bill passes, executions could then resume.
Mt. Healthy City Schools staff resign after state audit recommends cutting more positions
MOUNT HEALTHY, Ohio — There are more questions than answers in the Mt. Healthy School District. A state auditor's report is blasting the district for multiple mistakes. The school district has been in a state of fiscal emergency, but this week, a new report shows the district hired dozens of new teachers and staff and completed approximately $18 million in building projects without any plans to sustain operations. The result is a $10 million budget deficit.
