Dassel Area Man Sentenced in August 2022 Standoff in Meeker County

A Dassel man who was found guilty earlier this year on multiple charges stemming from a standoff last August was sentenced in recent days in Meeker County District Court.

The Dassel-Cokato Enterprise Dispatch reports that 32-year-old Aaron Peterson was sentenced to a year in jail and five years of probation.

You may remember the incident on August 1st of 2022 when Meeker County authorities were called to a residence where Peterson was reported to have threatened to kill family members at a residence south of Dassel.

Officials set up a perimeter around the home while Meeker County Sheriff’s deputies attempted negotiations with Peterson, and the Kandiyohi and Meeker County SWAT teams set up positions outside the residence.

The standoff continued for some 28 hours before Peterson finally exited the home without further incident and surrendered to law enforcement. No injuries were reported.

The judge in the case ordered 36 months in prison on an assault charge. That sentence was stayed, provided that Peterson successfully serves his five years of probation. He was also sentenced to 18 months in prison for felony threats of violence charges. That sentence was also stayed upon successfully-served probation.

Peterson was credited for 279 days already served toward his one-year jail sentence. Other conditions of his sentence included completion of a behavioral treatment program and a mental health diagnostic assessment, and follow all recommendations. He will also need to submit to random searches, give a DNA sample, and write a letter of apology to his victims. He will be barred from owning or operating firearms and other dangerous weapons.
