The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 22, as both rounds are wrapped up in one night. As it approaches, TGH will be taking a quick look some teams’ draft strategies, and shedding some light on what direction they will go with their picks.. Here is the Dallas Mavericks NBA Draft profile for 2023.
Summary
Dallas seemed poised to make the playoffs after a good start to the season, followed up by a blockbuster trade for star point guard Kyrie Irving. The Luka-Kyrie duo went just 5-11 in games played together, and the season spiraled.
They had a chance to make the Play-In Tournament, but tanked the last game of the season to secure a shot at a top-10 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The Mavericks were fined $750,000 for this move, but they did secure the 10th overall pick.
2023 Draft Picks
The Mavericks have one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
First Round (one pick):
- Pick #10
Team Needs
- Decision on Kyrie
- Support for Luka
- Depth
Projected Targets
Pick #10: Anthony Black, G, Arkansas
Being that the Mavericks only have this one pick, there are multiple possible scenarios here. They could trade it away for other picks that flesh out the roster, first of all. Second, they have all kinds of options if they decide to stay put. Cason Wallace makes sense if they get rid of Kyrie, opting for a three-and D point guard instead. If he stays, then Taylor Hendricks makes sense to give them more scoring and some elite defense on the wing.
But in this profile, the Mavs will split the difference and grab a combo guard, Anthony Black.
Black is fine from beyond the arc, but won’t fill it up from deep right away in the NBA (which could change, of course). What he is, though, is an elite ball-handler and passer that can play two positions, which is huge for a team that can utilize true so many players in so many ways.
His mid-range game is incredibly polished, and he’s quick enough to make it to the rim if the defense collapses on Luka. While this might seem like a very safe pick, it could be essential for a team that really only seems like it’s one good player away.
