Natron Energy to build $1.4B sodium-ion battery manufacturing facility

On Thursday, Natron Energy said it will build the first sodium-ion battery Gigafactory in the United States in Edgecombe County, N.C.

The nearly 1.2 million-square-foot, $1.4 billion factory is expected to produce 24GW of Natron’s sodium-ion batteries annually when it reached full capacity. The batteries offer higher power density, more cycles, and a domestic sodium-ion battery supply chain. The anticipated production capacity is 40 times what the company produces currently.

This flagship manufacturing facility will dramatically accelerate our efforts to deliver sodium-ion batteries to customers who are hungry for safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible energy storage solutions,” Colin Wessells, founder and co-CEO of Natron Energy, said. “After evaluating over 70 sites across 9 states, we found that North Carolina, with its leadership in the clean energy revolution, would make the perfect home for this project. The investment is supported by a North Carolina Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) and is expected to create more than 1,000 local jobs, and to grow the state’s economy by $3.4 billion over the next 12 years.
