Maryland corrections secretary steps down

Maryland's Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary Carolyn J. Scruggs is stepping down, WBAL-TV 11 News has learned. Scruggs, who was appointed by Gov. Wes Moore in 2023, was the first African American women to lead the agency. WBAL-TV 11 News reached out to the a department spokesperson for comment but has not received a response. In an interview Thursday night with WBAL's Robert Lang, Gov. Wes Moore acknowledged reports about Scruggs but declined to confirmed whether she was part of the administration.

On this episode of Maryland Unfolded, we learn about the history of Indigenous people in the land now known as Maryland, from the time before British settlers arrived through the first centuries of colonization. Host Dr. Ashley Minner Jones is joined by living historian Drew Shuptar-Rayvis (Pekatawas MakataweU “Black Corn”) to discuss how Native people shaped the region and how Maryland’s contemporary Indigenous communities are working to preserve their histories, languages, cultures, and traditions today. Drew’s heritage includes Indigenous Pocomoke, Pennsylvania Dutch, Welsh, Swiss, English, Scots-Irish, Boyko Ukrainian and Ashkenazi/Sephardi Jewish. InsideNoVa celebrates ribbon-cutting for new Manassas office

InsideNoVa held a ribbon-cutting for its new Manassas office on Thursday with the Prince William Chamber of Commerce and city leaders. The nearly 60 people who attended were able to tour the new space, meet InsideNoVa team members and enjoy networking and refreshments. InsideNoVa moved to the new office in May; it previously was in Woodbridge. "It’s important for us to be here because not only are we within walking distance of the courthouse and City Hall, which is great for our reporters, but we are centrally located in Prince William County – our primary coverage area," publisher Bruce Potter told attendees. Potter noted that the move was one of three major changes for the local news company this year - the others being its conversion to a new web platform and its expansion into offering targeted digital marketing solutions for local and regional businesses. Prince William Chamber of Commerce CEO Kristi Black and Manassas Mayor Ralph Smith also spoke during the event.
