Missing items, damaged art. What to learn from one couple's move to Durham
Lisa-Joy and Jack Unroe had a difficult move from California to Durham earlier this year, they said. Their experiences shed light on what to do when you’re hiring a professional moving company, and what to do throughout the move. Full story: Their move to NC was ‘disaster from start to finish.’ Lessons from couple’s story Here are good strategies for choosing a moving company: Vet your mover: Saige Heigel of the BBB of Eastern Carolinas said reputable movers are certified by agencies like the North Carolina Utilities Commission or registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, list contact information online and belong to trade groups such as the North Carolina Movers Association. Get multiple estimates: Doug Carlton, founder of Durham-based Truckin’ Movers, warned that some companies hook customers with cheap prices, collect a deposit and then mark up the cost. A fragrance tenant left Southpoint. Why the Durham mall says it's owed over $620K
The Streets at Southpoint mall is suing a former tenant for unpaid rent and other claims, according to a complaint filed Monday in Durham County Superior Court. General Growth Properties (GGP), the shopping center’s landlord, alleges that Aroma360 Southpoint NC LLC owes over $623,000 in accrued and projected rent damages. The company operated Aroma360 Luxury Scenting store. The complaint says the tenant failed to pay rent and other charges and never paid the required $30,000 security deposit. The complaint also alleges $39,982 was owed through Sept. 30 and says Aroma360 LLC guaranteed the tenant’s lease obligations. GGP is asking Durham County Superior Court to hold Aroma360 and Aroma360 LLC jointly responsible for the unpaid money. The complaint says a separate eviction case resulted in a Sept. 14 possession judgment, and the tenant left the mall around Sept. 30. The lease covered about 1,760 square feet, with base rent starting at $6,600 a month and scheduled to increase to $7,428 in 2030, when the lease ended. A spokesperson for GGP told The News & Observer that they could not comment on the pending complaint and don’t comment on tenant relations. The N&O has also reached out to Aroma360 for comment on
