Man charged in fatal overdose at Cumberland County hotel arrested years later: police

A man charged with supplying the drugs that caused a September 2020 overdose at a Cumberland County hotel was taken into custody last month in Indiana, police said.

Chandler Hernandez, 25, of Enola, is charged with drug delivery resulting in death and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in connection to a Sept. 18, 2020, fatal overdose, according to Upper Allen Township police.

Police were called to a room at the Econo Lodge at 650 Gettysburg Road at about 9:15 p.m., where officers found Dakota Owen in cardiac arrest. Police tried life-saving measures but were unsuccessful and Owen was pronounced dead.

The coroner determined his cause of death to be “acute fentanyl toxicity.”

Police searched the room and found drugs, paraphernalia and the presence of fentanyl, according to court records.

Police interviewed the woman who called 911 who said she was in the room with Owen when he went unconscious and that Owen had purchased fentanyl from Hernandez earlier that day, according to court records.

Cell phone tower records put Hernandez’ phone and Owen’s phone in an area that encompassed Hernandez’ home at the same time on Sept. 18: 11:45 a.m.

That apparent meeting came after four calls between Hernandez and Owen between 6:28 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., according to court records.
