Week in Review: Culpeper Cavaliers
The Culpeper Cavaliers continue to look for more wins than losses in this past week. With the Valley League stepping in and requesting postponements due to air quality on Thursday, it wasn’t helpful for the Cavaliers in this ambition. However, the week started and ended for the Cavs on rather good notes. TUESDAY, JUNE 6 The Cavs traveled to the Purcellville Cannons for a game at Fireman’s field. Although a loss, it was the first game that didn't end in a 10-run, seven inning game. The Cannons won 9-6. The Cavs showed just what they are capable of, though, as they tied the game 2-2 in the fourth that held on...

The Happiest Place on Earth: For athletes with special needs, soccer coach John Schlenker is a superhero
“I often tell people that the ‘happiest place on earth’ is the Vint Hill Gym, just outside of Warrenton, Virginia, on Saturday mornings. The smiles and laughter are contagious, and the hugs are plentiful,” says Fauquier County resident John Schlenker, chairman of Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA) TOPSoccer and director of TopSoccer for the Northern Piedmont Sports Club and the Virginia Soccer Association.
Madison boys one game away from states
Juniors Seth McLearen and Silas Carter both scored second-half goals to life No. 2 Madison County into Wednesday’s VHSL Class 2B boys’ soccer semifinal against third-seed Strasburg. The winner of that game is assured a spot in next week’s state championship round. The goals held up as the Mountaineers (16-4) beat a pesky Central – Woodstock (6-10-2) team that entered the tournament as the No. 7 team in the region. A 35-minute lightening delay held up play in the first half when referees halted play just 17 minutes into the match played on the McLearen pitch. Strasburg (14-4) beat No. 6 East Rockingham, 3-0, in another quarterfinal played Monday. Unbeaten Clarke County (20-0) demolished Luray, Monday, and will meet the Tuesday winner of Stuarts Draft and Mountain View – Quicksburg game on Wednesday in Berryville.
