The Culpeper Cavaliers opened their Valley League home slate Friday night to a crowd of roughly 400 fans. Unfortunately, the game went sour in the sixth, ending in a 12-2 loss to the Front Royal Cardinals. The Cavaliers host Charlottesville, Sunday evening, at Culpeper County High School. HARRISONBURG - Two Madison County long-distance runners scored points for the Mountaineers at Saturday’s VHSL Class 2 boys outdoor track and field state championships held at JMU’s Sentara Park. Freshman Evan Roberts finished fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:43.93 and junior Aiden Griffin placed sixth in the 3,200 run. Madison finished in a tie for 25th place in the Class 2 championship.

The winner of that game is assured a spot in next week’s state championship round. The goals held up as the Mountaineers (16-4) beat a pesky Central – Woodstock (6-10-2) team that entered the tournament as the No. 7 team in the region. A 35-minute lightening delay held up play in the first half when referees halted play just 17 minutes into the match played on the McLearen pitch. Strasburg (14-4) beat No. 6 East Rockingham, 3-0, in another quarterfinal played Monday. Unbeaten Clarke County (20-0) demolished Luray, Monday, and will meet the Tuesday winner of Stuarts Draft and Mountain View – Quicksburg game on Wednesday in Berryville.
