    Thursday Roundup: Crooksville, West M baseball fall late in tourney action

    WHEELERSBURG — Crooksville baseball had top seed Wheelersburg sweating on Thursday.

    The 25th-seeded Ceramics led by two going to the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Pirates scored single tallies in the final three innings to escape with a 3-2 win in the Division III sectional final.

    Wheelersburg loaded the bases on a walk, a single and an error in the seventh before Jake Darling was hit by a pitch to bring in the winning run.

    Jace Thompson went the distance in the loss, scattering seven hits with five walks and two strikeouts, while the Ceramics leaned on small ball to get the lead.

    Bo White's sacrifice bunt brought in Thompson in the second for a 1-0 lead, and Kyson Riggs' sacrifice bunt brought in Daniel Chapman for a 2-0 lead.

    The Pirates had a RBI sac fly in the fifth and Kolton Salyers singled home a run in the sixth to tie it, while Caden Conn threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks to earn the complete game win.

    Kameron Savage had the only hit for Crooksville.

    Tusky Valley 7, West Muskingum 6: The second-seeded Trojans watched the ninth-seeded Tornadoes erase a 5-1 deficit, but they scored twice in the sixth, including the go-ahead RBI single by Kainan Bradford to claim the Division III sectional title.

    West M was down 5-1 going to the fourth when a pair of hit batters and a single loaded the bases. Wes Houston followed with a RBI single then Rashid SeSay scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit in half. Cam Fowler and Houston then each scored on a passed ball to tie it at 5.

    The Tornadoes went ahead 6-5 in the sixth when Ashton Ansel singled and an error by Tusky Valley allowed Fowler to score.

    Unfortunately, West M could not mount a rally in the seventh.

    Alston Williamson allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks in five innings to take the loss, while Fowler had two of the Tornadoes' six hits.

    Roman Farnsworth had 10 strikeouts and gave up four runs on three hits in 3⅓ innings for the victory and Bradford collected two of the Trojans' nine hits.

    Sandy Valley 5, Ridgewood 0: Winning pitcher Branson Long had six strikeouts and six walks and combined with Tyler Burk for a no-hitter, as the third-seeded Cardinals shut out the 11th-seeded Generals in a Division III sectional final.

    Maison Kiser took the complete game loss, giving up five runs, two earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

    The Cardinals scored all five of their runs in the fifth, highlighted by Drew Graybill's two-run single.

    Barnesville 2, Buckeye Trail 0: The sixth-seeded Warriors were held to three hits in a sectional final loss to the top-seeded Shamrocks.

    Tyler Harrell tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts and five walks in suffering the loss for Trail, while Harrell, Mason McQuain and Sam Wayble had the only hits for the offense.

    Barnesville scored both runs in the second as Marshall Meade and Aydon Vanhorn hit RBI singles in that frame, while Jaxon Wiley fanned four and walked four in the complete game victory.

    Maysville 10, Meadowbrook 1: Winning pitcher Coen Fink had 11 strikeouts in 6⅔ innings and combined on a one-hitter with Wesley Armstead, as the Panthers finished off Muskingum Valley League play with a win.

    Tyler Debolt had a triple and a single with three RBIs and three runs scored and Fink went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Maysville offense. Ryan Parmer also drove in three runs.

    Cohen Miles allowed four runs on three hits in 1⅔ innings for the loss and Braylon Lowery had a single and a RBI for the Colts.

    Track

    Numerous regional qualifiers at Meadowbrook: Several area athletes earned regional berths during the first day of the Division II district meet on Wednesday at Meadowbrook.

    The top four finishers in each event advanced to the regional meet.

    On the girls side, John Glenn's Ashlynn Kuklica, Kira Kaiser, Laurie Baughman and Brea Wilfong won the 4x800 relay in 9 minutes, 58 seconds; and Meadowbrook's Karrah Singleton, Luceilia Casey, Marabelle Thornberry and Kenli Norman were third (10:16). John Glenn's Ava Hoffman won the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) with Cambridge's Madie Beadle and Morgan's Josie Patterson tying for second (4-10). John Glenn's Chelsea Sotherden placed first in the shot (39-7 1/4) with Maysville's Bella Van Wey second (38-2 1/2) and Cambridge's Janelle Rominger fourth (34-2 3/4); and John Glenn's Brayden Snider won the pole vault (12-1) with Philo's Delylah Boetcher third (9-6) and John Glenn's Brooklyn Valentine fourth (9-6).

    For the boys, Cambridge's Cinjin Gibson won the pole vault (12-6) with John Glenn's Alex Smith second (12-0). Cambridge's Eli Edwards placed first in the long jump (20-10) with Philo's Aidan Mahon second (20-9 1/2) and Meadowbrook's Jamarcus Berger fourth (19-10). John Glenn's Caiden Lake, Tanner Caudill, Ethan Zell and Kaid Ritchey placed second in the 4x800 relay (8:32.27).

    Sheridan boys, girls fourth in district meet at Meigs: The Generals had several regional qualifiers, as the boys scored 64 points and the girls 66.5 points.

    Along with the boys 4x800 placing first on Monday, Tate Ruthers won the 3,200 (9:25.09) and Simon Conrad took first in the 800 (2:00.55) and third in the 1,600 (4:39.26). Hunter Adams finished third in the 400 (51.18) and Cole Davis was third in the shot (45-11 1/2) to advance on Thursday.

    Lily Dennis won the discus (140-9) after winning the shot (36-5 1/2) on Monday, while Isabella King was third in the discus (115-1). Beckett Strong placed second in the 800 (2:20.02), the 4x400 finished second (4:09.22), along with the 4x800 in fourth, and Claire Shriner finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (46.85) for the Sheridan girls.

    The New Lex girls were 12th (11 points) and the boys 15th (9), as Jocee Bowen finished second in the girls 100 hurdles (15.66) to move on for the Panthers.

    Buckeye Trail, Rosecrans boys earn regional qualifiers: The Warriors and Bishops will send several onto next week's meet from the Division III district meet at St. Clairsville. The top four placers advanced.

    Donovan Geiger won the 100 (10.98 seconds) and 200 (22.45) and joined Mason Todd, Charlie Parry and Koen Eagon on the first-place 4x100 (44.13) and 4x200 (1:31.09) relays. Parry placed second in the high jump (6-2), Eagon finished second in the 300 hurdles (41.38) and Todd was fourth in the 200 (23.34). They joined Janson Alloway, who won the pole vault (14-0) on Monday, as the Warriors were the district runner-ups (83 points) to Tusky Valley, which had 98.

    Brody Zemba finished second in the 200 (22.87) and third in the 100 (11.33), the 4x100 relay of Evan Backus, Conner Wells, Tizian Schmelzer and Zemba came in fourth (45.32), and Wells was fourth in the 300 hurdles (43.35) to advance for the Rosecrans boys, who were seventh (36). They join Stephen Sagan, who was third in the long jump (19-8) on Monday.

    Local sports briefs

    Ridgewood, Buckeye Trail athletes earn IVC honors: The Inter-Valley Conference released its spring sports awards on Wednesday.

    In baseball, Buckeye Trail seniors Cale Gazda and Braden Williams and junior Mason McQuain were named to the North Division First Team, as Williams was selected as the North Player of the Year and Warriors' Cory McQuain was tabbed Coach of the Year after winning the division. Sophomore Tyler Harrell made second team and sophomore Sammy Brown was honorable mention.

    Ridgewood sophomore Jace McQueen earned second-team accolades and sophomore Connor Croy was honorable mention in the South Division.

    In softball, Ridgewood senior Tarryn Morris and junior Maggie Shannon were first-team selections for the South Division, while sophomore Addison Lahmers made second team and sophomore Kaydence Lahna was honorable mention.

    Buckeye Trail sophomore Ella Ashby earned first-team honors in the North Division, while senior Morgan Watson was named second team and junior Gwen McElwain received honorable mention.

    In track and field, Buckeye Trail had several boys on the first team after winning the North Division title with 79.5 points. Senior Charlie Parry (high jump), senior Janson Alloway (pole vault), the 4x100 and 4x200 relays of Parry, seniors Koen Eagon and Donovan Geiger, and sophomore Mason Todd collected first-team accolades. Geiger was second team in the 100 and Elian Arick and Austin Hastings were honorable mention.

    Ridgewood sophomores Talon Carnes (300 hurdles) and Cody Croy (seated shot) made first team, senior Max McCoy (pole vault) and junior Logan Sesser (shot) were on the second team and juniors Matt Humphrey and Logan Zimmer were honorable mention.

    For girls, Ridgewood sophomore Kenzie Bice made first team in the 200 and seniors Alaina Swiney and Karie Sells earned honorable mention for the Generals, while Buckeye Trail junior Kayleigh Abrams was second team in the 300 hurdles and senior Emily Randulic and freshman Kristalyn Watson received honorable mention for the Warriors.

    Goins Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing in June: The sixth annual Myron and Ruth Goins Memorial Scholarship Foundation outing will be June 23 at Fuller's Fairways.

    Five scholarships will be awarded to five graduating seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA, enrollment in a two or four-year accredited college in the fall and a resume with what college they are attending and a description of future goals.
