Man charged with DUI in crash that seriously hurt 4-year-old

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man is facing driving under the influence charges after a crash in Cranston that seriously hurt a 4-year-old.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday a driver ran a stop sign and crashed into another car at the intersection of Farmington and Dyer avenues, according to police.

Police say 37-year-old Jose Duque Morales of Providence showed signs of impairment at the scene. He was taken into custody and is currently at Rhode Island Hospital.

The 4-year-old passenger in his car was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, including a head injury. The child is still being treated at Hasbro Childen’s Hospital, police said.

The driver and one passenger in the other vehicle were also brought to Rhode Island Hospital for minor injuries.

Police said it appears that Morales was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Morales was charged with driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury and driving under the influence with a passenger under 13. He was arraigned Friday morning and his bail is set at $10,000 personal recognizance. He’s due back in court on Aug. 31.

The crash remains under investigation.
