The man who robbed a gas station in Coweta and shot the clerk five times was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday.
In Nov. 2021, Ellic Hayden entered the Kum and Go near 151st Street and Highway 72 in Coweta, pulled out a pistol, and demanded money from the clerk.
The clerk gave him money and then Hayden shot him five times. The victim had to be transported to a hospital in Tulsa and survived his injuries.
“It was murder but for a miracle,” declared District 27 District Attorney Jack Thorp. “Thankfully, the victim survived his injuries from this horrific attack.”
Investigators began looking to identify the suspect and an anonymous tip identified the man as Hayden. Law enforcement also learned Hayden was bragging about the attack.
Investigators recovered the black ski mask Hayden wore during the attack and was able to positively identify him through a DNA test.
Hayden was charged with one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and one count of entering the premises while masked.
Hayden entered a blind plea in Wagoner County District Court in early February, and on Tuesday a judge sentenced him to life in prison for the crime.
