On March 20, the Coweta City Council approved the purchase of a 2,100-square-foot, four-bedroom mobile home that will serve as a temporary living and working quarters for the Coweta Fire Department until a new station can be completed.
The new home is directly behind the existing station, between two water towers.
"It is necessary to preserve the peace, health and safety of all Coweta citizens for the firefighters to be located as close as possible to their equipment and apparatus (engines and ambulances)," said the City of Coweta in a Facebook post about the situation.
In early March, Coweta firefighters reported health issues, and it was found that a high level of mold existed within the fire department's headquarters.
Since the mold was discovered, firefighters have been splitting their time between the fire engine bays at the existing station, and the Best Western Hotel in Coweta.
Firefighters will continue splitting their time at both sites until the mobile home has been delivered and set up, which is expected to happen sometime this week.
After the new station is completed, which is expected to happen in late 2024 or early 2025, the mobile home will be removed.
