Prosecutor: Man found guilty of possessing a handgun while being a convicted felon
A man was found guilty this week on charges stemming from an incident in Covington last year.According to Kenton County Prosecutor Rob Sanders, it started on May 13, 2022, when a man allegedly drove up to a group of people asking them to sell him marijuana. When they said they didn't have any, the man allegedly took out a gun and threatened to "blow your head off," and drove away. One of the people in the group called 911, and an officer later located a vehicle that matched the description the caller gave. The officer pulled the car over and conducted a DUI investigation before arresting the driver, identified as Henry Abrams, 68, from Independence. The officer located a handgun and marijuana in Abrams' car. When checking his criminal history, officers discovered Abrams had prior felony convictions for wanton endangerment, criminal mischief and federal bank robberies. A Kenton County Grand Jury indicted Abrams for possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and persistent felony offender. At his trial, Abrams' wife testified she had left the gun in the truck. Sanders counter-argued that even so, Abrams still had the gun when he allegedly threatened people on the street.A jury found Abrams guilty of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and of being a persistent felony offender and recommended the maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison. "Any convicted felon threatening Kenton County citizens with a gun can count on getting thumped. Jurors know it's a small number of repeat felons who commit the vast majority of our crime," Sanders said in a statement. "They're tired of habitual criminals and it shows in the hefty sentence imposed!"Abrams is scheduled to appear before Judge Lape again for formal sentencing on April 24, 2023.
