JASPER COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) -- A Jasper County man has been found dead after being identified as a suspect in a fatal hit and run.
According to the Newton County Sheriff's Office, on January 30, deputies responded to a hit and run involving a pedestrian on Highway 36 in Covington and found the pedestrian, Deanna Mattheus, dead at the scene.
Investigators were able to determine that debris left by the vehicle involved would have come from a Ford, which would now have damage on the passenger side. Newton County Deputies offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
On February 28th, deputies named 50-year-old James Jenkins of Monticello as the suspect. Reports say that Jenkins, however, had been found dead by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Monticello by Jasper County Deputies the day before.
