Oregon Wind Alert: Gusts Up to 45 MPH Threaten I-84 Saturday Night
By Paige Sullivan,
9 hours agoLa Grande, OR – Drivers across eastern Oregon should prepare for potentially difficult travel conditions this weekend as strong winds are expected to sweep through the Grande Ronde Valley, with gusts reaching 45 mph and the greatest impacts anticipated Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are forecast across portions of the Grande Ronde Valley beginning late Saturday afternoon, November 7, and continuing into Sunday morning, November 8.
Forecasters indicate an 80% probability of sustained winds exceeding 30 mph in parts of the valley, with the strongest conditions expected around Ladd Canyon.
The approaching wind event could create hazardous conditions for motorists, particularly those operating high-profile vehicles such as tractor-trailers, recreational vehicles and vehicles towing trailers.
The National Weather Service specifically identifies Interstate 84, Oregon Highway 203 and Oregon Highway 237 as major routes potentially affected by the stronger winds.
Ladd Canyon, located along the I-84 corridor southeast of La Grande, is expected to experience some of the strongest wind speeds during the event.
Wind gusts reaching 45 mph could make vehicle handling more difficult, particularly along exposed stretches of highway.
Lightweight outdoor objects may also be blown around as stronger gusts move through the region.
While the Grande Ronde Valley faces the greatest wind threat, breezy conditions are expected elsewhere across central Oregon, with winds becoming more widespread Saturday night.
Residents should consider securing loose outdoor furniture, decorations and other lightweight items before conditions deteriorate.
Motorists planning to travel along I-84 or nearby state highways Saturday evening and overnight should remain alert for sudden gusts and changing driving conditions.
The National Weather Service expects the strongest winds from late Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning.
