Farmington, NM — Flood warnings remain in effect across San Juan County in northwestern New Mexico through Wednesday, Nov. 4, as elevated river levels continue creating potentially dangerous conditions despite improving weather.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, flooding remains a concern along the Animas, San Juan and La Plata rivers. The Animas and San Juan rivers have already crested and are expected to gradually recede through Wednesday.

The warnings come as communities around Farmington and surrounding areas continue monitoring waterways following recent flooding.

Officials are urging residents to stay away from rivers and avoid driving through flooded roadways, even as water levels begin declining.

Floodwater can conceal damaged pavement, debris and strong currents. Drivers encountering water covering a roadway should turn around rather than attempt to cross.

The National Weather Service emphasized its familiar safety message: "Turn Around Don't Drown!"

Although the immediate flooding concern remains centered on San Juan County, much of central and northern New Mexico is expected to experience quieter fall weather over the coming days.

Wednesday, Nov. 4, will bring seasonable temperatures and breezy afternoon conditions. Farmington is forecast to reach 59 degrees, with wind gusts potentially reaching 21 mph.

Albuquerque could reach 64 degrees Wednesday, while Santa Fe is expected to reach 58 degrees.

Colder overnight temperatures will remain a concern in northern mountain communities.

Taos is forecast to experience lows near 24 degrees on multiple mornings, while Angel Fire could drop to just 14 degrees Friday, Nov. 6.

Despite those colder readings, the National Weather Service expects generally pleasant fall weather through early next week, with temperatures near or slightly below seasonal averages.

Residents in San Juan County should continue following official flood warnings until they are lifted and avoid river access areas where water remains elevated.
