BATON ROUGE, La. - After a disappointing outing at the Pac-12 Tournament, Oregon State baseball opened up NCAA regional play Friday with a 18-2 win over Sam Houston State.
The Bearkats started the game with 3 hits in the top of the first inning including a two-run home run by Justin Wishkoski to put the Beavers down 2-0.
But from there it was all OSU. Micah McDowell got the action going with a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Then the next batter, Mason Guerra, followed it up with a solo homer as the Beavers finished the inning with a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third, OSU added to their lead with a two-run RBI double by Gavin Turley to put them up 6-2. Then Mikey Kane followed that with a two-run home run next; it not only gave Oregon State a six-run lead, but also tied the Beavers' post-season record for single-game home runs with three.
OSU tacked on one run in the fourth and fifth innings, two runs in the sixth, and then exploded for another five runs in the seventh, including another three-run homer by Turley. That’s the home run that broke the record, etching their names into the history books until an Oregon State team manages to hit five in a game.
The Beavs have struggled with pitching over the last couple of weeks due to some injuries within their rotation, but that was not the case Friday afternoon.
Trent Sellers got the start against Sam Houston State and after the first three hits in the first inning, he was lights out. He finished the game with five strikeouts and one walk in 7.1 innings pitched, but he helped retire 20 straight batters from the end of the first inning all the way until the 8th.
Next, Oregon State faces the host school, LSU, Saturday at 6 p.m.
