Continuing her One Oregon Listening Tour, Gov. Tina Kotek (D-Ore.) was in Corvallis on Thursday visiting the Hewlett Packard facility.
She is supporting SB4, a bill making its way through the state senate right now. SB4 focuses on pushing for funds from the federal CHIPS Act to come to Oregon to support the semiconductor industry, which is a major source of jobs and GDP in the state.
"It's very important for Oregon to put money on the table," Kotek said. "There's $200 million attached to [the federal] bill. Also flexibility in where we could site new locations for manufacturers is critical for us to be out there saying Oregon is open for business and we want some of that federal CHIPS money to come here."
SB4 is expected to move through the Joint Committee on Ways and Means on Friday. If passed it will head to the Senate floor for a vote.
The governor also addressed the legislature's passage of a $200 million housing and homelessness package. She said she will sign that legislation next week as it was her first priority as governor.
"It's the first step in this legislative session," she said, "so it's the first step in helping people who are homeless plus getting a start on our housing construction issues. So most of the money will help communities get folks from the streets into shelter and into permanent housing, but it also has money for modular housing, pre-development support for people to build projects, and I was just testifying this morning on other things we can do to make it easier and faster to do construction - home construction - here in Oregon. We're going to have to do all of that so we can build more homes."
Gov. Kotek also visited Philomath High School to meet with kids in Career Technical Education (CTE). She encouraged those students to pursue careers in construction.
