Applications are now open for the High School Journalism Institute, a collaboration between Oregonian Media Group and Oregon State University.
This year’s program will be held July 15-22, 2023, at the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. The online application and eligibility criteria are at oregonhsji.org/apply.
The eight-day High School Journalism Institute is offered at no cost to students. Participants stay in residence halls on the Oregon State campus; work with journalism professionals from The Oregonian/OregonLive and other Oregon media outlets; and use state-of-the-art facilities at Orange Media Network, Oregon State’s award-winning student media department. They also earn a college credit upon completion.
With guidance from their professional mentors, participants use real journalism skills to report and photograph a 32-page newspaper, as well as blog and produce multimedia pieces for The Oregonian’s website, OregonLive.com.
The deadline to apply is May 19, but students are encouraged to apply early.
Applicants should review the eligibility requirements, then will need to gather and submit materials including a letter of recommendation from a teacher, a personal statement, an essay, and any work samples.
If there are financial or other barriers to attendance, such as transportation to or from Corvallis, students are encouraged to apply, then contact institute director Elliot Njus to discuss their individual circumstances. Email enjus@oregonian.com.
