Deadly shooting in Barrio Logan prompts investigation

SAN DIEGO — A deadly shooting in Barrio Logan has prompted a homicide investigation, authorities said.

FOX 5’s Elizabeth Alvarez is on scene at the intersection of 16th and Logan Avenue, where there’s a heavy police presence and visible crime scene tape.

Several roadways in the area, including portions of 16th and Commercial Streets, are currently blocked off as investigators probe the area.

A police officer confirmed to FOX 5 that a man was fatally shot in the chest just before 6 a.m. in front of what appears to be a green tent on a sidewalk in the area.

The man, who police say is in his 50s, died after he was taken to a local hospital, authorities confirmed.

Police told FOX 5 the victim was reported to have had some sort of altercation with the suspect prior to the shooting. There is little suspect information available at this time.

“From the witnesses, there appeared to be some sort of altercation that occurred between the victim and the suspect. The nature of that altercation we don’t know at this point,” said Lt. Steve Shebloski, SDPD, Homicide Unit. “I don’t think there’s any active threat to the public, but it is something that we’re obviously looking for — someone that was involved in a shooting that killed somebody but there is no active (threat) with neighbors or businesses or residents in the area.”

Alvarez says there are several homeless encampments in the area and the shooting appears to have taken place in close proximity to Perkins K-8 School. Police were seen escorting children to school in the area Friday morning.

As of 9 a.m., police say this situation does not appear to be a threat to the greater community and may just be an isolated event.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
