A new $10,000 smallmouth bass is back on the Coquille River along with dozens of other prize fish for this year's Bass Derby.
It's hosted by the Port of Coquille River, and this year the event will give anglers more than two weekends to land a prize.
Port Commissioner Fred Fry tells us that's because though roughly 3,000 bass were caught during the derby's first run last year, the invasive fish continues to be problematic for the Coquille River's salmon run.
"We recognize that we need to change our format. From now on, we're going to start on the free fishing weekend, and the Bass Derby will go all summer long," said Fry. "We're trying to reduce their numbers. We're not going to get rid of them, but we're going to reduce their numbers because the salmon, before they reach smolt stage, have to stay in the river to grow up to that point. That's when they're vulnerable to the bass. Reducing their numbers gives the salmon a chance."
Fry says 80 fish are tagged for cash prizes, and anglers are welcome to fish from boats, boat ramps and paddle boards.
Fish must be scanned either on Saturdays at Sturdivant Park or on Sundays at Myrtle Point Boat Ramp from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. to receive money.
Tickets are $20 and free for children 12 and under and for disabled veterans.
