Students, staff and volunteers laced up their sneakers and hit the pavement Friday for the Madison Elementary School Jog-A-Thon.
Rebekah Rogalsky, who organized the fundraiser says, although they're appreciative of a school bond that allowed them to renovate their building, there were no funds left over to address the playground area.
She says the swings were removed during renovations to allow for access to the building.
Madison began to raise money to fund the playground themselves through t-shirt sales and pottery raffles.
Friday's Jog-A-Thon is another way to assist the effort.
"Swing set, new basketball hoops. The larger goal is to replace the climbing structure which is about $180,000. So this is a long-term goal, and we're just going to chip away at it as much as we can," said Rogalsky. "We wanted to start with an event that allowed students to get involved as well as welcome back community members."
About 30 volunteers including parents were on hand for the event as students racked up steps toward a $5,000 goal for the day.
Prizes will be distributed to top individual fundraisers and to the kiddos who run the most laps along with the classrooms that do both.
