For the second year in a row, the Marshfield High School boys track and field team brought home the state 4A title.
It was a close finish at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Head Coach Chad Scriven, who is also the team's throws coach, took over the program in 2018.
He credits the back-to-back wins to coaching and great athletes.
The victory came at the last second with Marshfield down by three and a half points.
Sophomore Bodey Lutes used the meet as an opportunity to break the state 4A record in the 400 meter run with a time of 48.29.
He took a second-place finish in the 800m.
"I was on top of the world. I mean, being on the podium with the guys and winning was just everything," said Lutes. "My family and my coaches and, of course, my teammates, were just a big part, and it really helped."
Alex Garcia-Silver had a strong showing for his final state championship as a high school student winning the 1500 and 3000.
Though racing the clock, he set a meet record for the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:31.
"They were great solo efforts, and I was happy with them. And I'm excited to just go compete more against some deeper fields," said Garcia-Silver.
The Pirates were able to edge out the team ahead of them, securing the win in the last event of the meet - the 4X400 meter relay.
Lutes and Garcia-Silver were also members of that relay.
"Trying to put it all on the line because we all knew that it was a win or lose situation right here," said Garcia-Silver.
"Our boys knew that they had to basically beat Pendleton by at least two places in order to make up the points difference. It's always a nice dramatic way to finish the meet. It's probably more stressful than I like," said Coach Scriven, who says next year will require a bit of rebuilding as they lose several key athletes.
He has hopes with his younger athletes and a few strong alternates who performed well on his relays, that they'll be able to coach the students to a level where they score at state next season.
Garcia-Silver will race this weekend in the Portland Track Festival in the High Performance high school mile followed by the Nike National meet in the coming weeks.
He's attending Brigham Young University on a track scholarship in the fall.
