U.S. Coast Guard rescues 3 after fishing boat sinks near Coos Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard provided two helicopters to complete a rescue at Cape Arago in June 2020.

U.S. Coast Guard rescuers saved three people Monday morning after their fishing boat started sinking in the waters off Cape Arago beach, about 15 miles southwest of Coos Bay.

The three people, whom officials did not publicly identify, showed signs of hypothermia and were treated by first responders, the US. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest said in a tweet Monday morning.

Rescuers tried recovering the 17-foot fishing boat, but it had already disappeared underwater, officials said.

The sinking boat was reported about 8 a.m. A 47-foot motor lifeboat and a helicopter operated by U.S. Coast Guard workers from Coos Bay and North Bend were at the scene within 30 minutes, where they found the three people in the water wearing life jackets, according to the tweet.

A rescuer was lowered onto the lifeboat and helped administer first aid to the three people.

“We are thankful that these individuals are alive and wearing life jackets,” the tweet said.
