15 motorists die on Georgia roads during Memorial Day holiday travel period

This includes a Florida man on I-75 near Sparks.

TIFTON, Ga. – According to an article by the Tifton Grapevine newspaper, At least 15 people died in traffic accidents on Georgia roads, including a Florida man on Interstate 75 in Cook County, during the Memorial Day weekend, authorities say.

The Ga. Department of Public Safety listed 15 traffic fatalities from 6 p.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Monday.

This weekend’s Cook County fatality occurred shortly before 3:50 p.m. Saturday at I-75 Mile Marker 43 near Sparks, said Cook County Coroner Tim Purvis.

The driver died in the single-car accident, and his wife was transported to South Georgia Medical Center; the couple was heading south, apparently returning from Atlanta, Purvis said.

No other details were available Tuesday. A trooper from Georgia State Patrol Post 13 in Tifton handled the accident, but could not be reached before presstime.

In 2022, 10 fatalities were reported during the Memorial Day weekend travel period in Georgia. The most traffic deaths recorded during a Memorial Day holiday weekend was in 1969, when 27 people died on state roads, according to the Department of Public Safety.
