Forest officials continue assessing wind-damaged areas
Recent intense windstorms have swept across the Kootenai National Forest, leaving several areas, across all land ownerships, heavily impacted. While wind events are a common and important disturbance dynamic for forest ecosystems, these recent events resulted in unprecedented levels of downed trees and woody debris across the forest. Forest Service officials are taking action to evaluate and quickly address the blowdown areas to provide for public safety, to improve forest health, reduce the increased wildfire risk and identify commercial opportunities. Forest service personnel, in cooperation with state, county, and local partners, are focusing on identifying the priority areas to outline the most immediate needs. To accomplish this quickly, data from a full forest fixed-wing reconnaissance flight, along with footage from drone and helicopter flights, is being utilized to gain more information on the highest impacted areas and road systems and the overall forest conditions. Decisions on which areas will be addressed first are made with public safety being the main concern then forest health, followed by finding all opportunities for recovering salvageable timber value. In addition to wildfire risks, downed trees and heavy fuel loads can also provide fertile habitat for non-native and invasive species and other destructive pests, adding

Northwest Montana wraps up record warm winter
West Glacier recorded its warmest winter in more than 75 years, finishing the 2025-26 season with an average daily temperature 6.6 degrees above normal. The gateway community to Glacier National Park set new daily high temperatures on eight occasions last winter, eclipsing the 50-degree mark three times. The National Weather Service in Missoula shared the data Thursday while recapping an abnormally warm winter across the Northern Rockies driven by La Niña conditions. “In the Northern Rockies, a La Niña typically means a cooler and wetter winter, although not always,” the Weather Service reported. “This season, however, broke records for warmth in many valley locations and set individual high-temperature records on multiple days.” Residents in West Glacier shoveled just 37 inches of snow this winter. Typically, the mountain region records about 80 inches of snowfall. In the Flathead Valley, Kalispell experienced its fourth-warmest winter since records began in 1889, with an average temperature 5.7 degrees above normal. While the city received ample liquid precipitation — about an inch above average — only 22.5 inches of snowfall was measured. The total is well below the 30-year average of 38 inches, according to Weather Service data. Libby had a winter “for the history

Libby family struggles to resume everyday life following flood
The conversation stopped as soon as the car came to a halt. "Come on, come on,” Nathan Cernick muttered under his breath as he pressed on the gas. The 2001 Outback Subaru revved as its oversized tires slipped on the mud, slick from rain and melted snow. The ruts under the car were a foot deep. Wheels spun in the water. Cernick tried to gain momentum by putting the car in reverse and jamming it into drive. The wheels lost traction every time. Eventually, everyone clambered out, careful not to sink into the thick sludge. With less weight in the vehicle, the car slipped out of the pit with ease. “It’s not a nice road,” Nathan remarked, echoing a months’ old inside joke with his family. The muddy 4x4 trail behind the Cernicks’ home outside Libby is the only way the family can leave their property. December’s flooding wiped out a chunk of a private haul road, leaving a gap about the size of a football field. It was their sole connection to Swede Mountain Road, a main artery in a rural neighborhood outside of town. The atmospheric river that swept through the Pacific Northwest in December brought catastrophic floods

‘It Was a Rough One’: Flathead Valley Ski Areas Wrap Up Weak Winter With a Bang
Last year on Christmas Eve, when chairlifts started spinning at Blacktail Mountain to launch the 2025-2026 season, a recent storm had dropped just enough snow to open the upside-down ski area outside of Lakeside, where the parking lot is located at the 6,780-foot summit. Staff were only able to operate the top half of the 1,000-acre ski hill due to thin coverage on the lower mountain, but they were open for business.
