Carol Guzman & Clyde Aspevig: “Land Snorkeling” Painters
Perhaps the most artistic residents of the Gallatin Valley in south-central Montana are the married couple Carol Guzman and Clyde Aspevig. Both of these gifted painters are passionate about preserving undeveloped expanses of Western landscape, and it was Guzman who first memorably described their zeal for attentive nature walks as “land snorkeling.” Today the couple maintains a website (landsnorkel.com) that encourages browsers to help preserve the environment, in part because it can, in Guzman’s words, “awaken our senses to the wonderful mysteries that await the curious mind.”

This week 72 years ago: "Timberjack” filmed in Polson, Pettit wins rodeo trophy, laundromat hosts grand opening
The Flathead Courier, September 16, 1954 "Timberjack” scenes taken around Polson The cast and company of the Republic Pictures Corporation arrived in Polson from Missoula Monday morning and immediately started filming scenes for the motion picture "Timberjack," which the company is producing in Western Montana. Equipment and personnel arrived here in 20 units of trucks and buses, besides the private cars used by the staff. Many townspeople turned out to watch the shooting of the scenes, attracted by the numerous amount of equipment used in the settings. Scenes were shot at the Polson Lumber Company plant Monday morning in the interior of the mill and the scene of the running team leaving the mill. The afternoon shots were made at the John Cline home, showing Sterling Hayden's arrival as the picture hero, who comes home after being notified his father had met with a serious accident while alone in the woods. Vera Ralston, star of the film, with Hayden, plays the part of beautiful, talented Lynne Tilton, owner of the Vermillion Belle saloon, who was in the scene to greet Tim Chipman (Hayden) home. FWP bear specialist: High activity, do your part
It has not been what we would consider a good natural food year. Bear activity has been high throughout the summer, which means this fall you may see conflicts and bear activity significantly increase. So far this spring and summer, we have had 271 black bear conflict calls in the northern part of FWP Region 1, with a majority of those coming from Whitefish. Most of those conflicts are bears in unsecured garbage and birdfeeders. Over the last few years, the bear resistant containers have significantly helped lower conflicts in the Whitefish area, but time and time again we see they do not hold up against bears due to human error, including having a broken latch, not shutting the can property, and overfilling the can. The cans are working. We have also received many videos and reports of the cans working well. Where the bears are really getting into issues is the outskirts of Whitefish where people have not implemented bear resistant containers. The bears are already starting to come back down from feeding on berries in the mountains, and at this point, their hyperphagia really kicks in. Bears are extremely opportunistic and looking for any food source to pack

Correction: Polson murals are projects of Sandpiper Gallery’s Art4Polson
A story that appeared on page B3 of last week’s Leader, titled “A colorful touch: Six murals completed by nonprofit Art in Polson” inaccurately credits the community mural-making project to the wrong organization, due to erroneous information received by the newspaper. Sue Arneson, president of the board of directors for Sandpiper Art Gallery and Gifts, informed the newspaper that all six murals are projects of Art4Polson, a Polson public art program owned and operated by Sandpiper Art Gallery & Gifts, not the newly founded Art in Polson, as the story reported. “The projects were developed, designs voted on by the board of directors and carried out under the Sandpiper's nonprofit organization,” writes Arneson. “Grants and donations supporting the projects were awarded to, received by, and administered through Sandpiper; Sandpiper provided the applicable organizational insurance; and each participating property owner entered into an agreement with Sandpiper for placement of the mural on their building.” She also noted that Art in Polson is a separate nonprofit organization recently formed by Natalie Raffield that has no affiliation with the Sandpiper, and nor was it responsible for any of the murals that now adorn downtown businesses. Art4Polson remains an ongoing program of Sandpiper Art

Glacier Art Museum hosts 'A Glacier Gallery' book signing and talk
A new book, "A Glacier Gallery: True Tales and Hidden History," is the focus of an author talk and book signing on Sept. 18 at Glacier Art Museum. Authors Ray Djuff, Bill Lundgren and Scott Tanner will speak about their experience writing and researching together, sharing insights into the stories of historic art and artifacts from Glacier National Park and railroad history. Through 66 essays filled with hidden history, curious legends, colorful personalities and fascinating moments from Glacier National Park's past, Djuff, Lundgren and Tanner cover the park’s lesser-known side. The 152-page book features 218 color photographs and illustrations. "As part of the museum’s mission to preserve the artistic legacy of Montana and Glacier National Park, this book connects true stories of the park with important historic visual primary resources found in museums and collections," a press release states. "Readers will discover the supposed secret to catching big fish in Glacier, the mystery behind a lonely gravesite near the Altyn ghost town, how crews battle the massive 'Big Drift' along the Going-to-the-Sun Road each spring." Djuff, a former daily newspaper editor, became entranced with Glacier and Canada's Waterton Lakes National Park in the 1970s during four summers spent at the

Columbia Falls native opens first Lagree studio in Kalispell
Columbia Falls native Cassie Baldelli (Stoneman) and her business partner Lynn Stoll recently opened the valley’s first Lagree studio and spa near the new Costco off Highway 93. Lagree exercise machines use springs that can be fine-tuned to a person’s ability, perfect for someone who is just starting out with an exercise regime or rehabilitating from an injury all the way up to a person looking to sculpt their body exactly to their liking. “There’s a modification for pretty much any level of fitness,” Baldelli noted during a recent tour of Core & Co. last week. Every class offered is a full body workout, she added. “It’s really different than Pilates,” she said. Core & Co. offers both group, private one-on-one and private classes, she said. They also have yoga and hot yoga classes as well as hot sculpt classes as well. People can also get Botox, IVs, vitamins, fillers and chemicals peels through Dr. Lauren Keeney, a wellness physician. The gym offers childcare for working moms, so moms don’t have to worry about their children while working out. Both Stoll and Baldelli have three children of their own and know all too well the challenges of finding care while

GNP Logan Pass Shuttle Service Wrapping up for the Season
(West Glacier) – Glacier National Park’s new Logan Pass shuttle service and three-hour parking limits are wrapping up for the season. Parking at the pass returns to a first-come, first-served basis with no time limits until Going-to-the-Sun Road closes for the winter. Park officials call the inaugural 2026 pilot program a major success, noting it significantly boosted vehicle turnover. By handing out up to thirteen-hundred free three-hour permits daily, the park allowed more visitors to reliably access the popular destination while dramatically cutting shuttle wait times.

Eagle Scout project to revamp Somers Beach State Park
Arrol Oxford’s Eagle Scout project was initially a modest idea to plant a few trees at Somers Beach State Park, but after the community showed support for upgrades at the park, the project has since taken on a life of its own. Oxford, 17, has spent the last year planning, fundraising and preparing to install three picnic tables, plant 25 native trees and bushes, and design a pollinator garden to create a space where he envisions families will be able to sit in the shade and picnic by the lake. “I was just wondering what the [state parks] needed help with,” said Oxford, who watched his older brother complete a project at Lone Pine State Park last year. “I was really down to do anything that would help the community. That’s the focus of Eagle Scout projects, is really anything that’s going to benefit the community you’re in. My project gives people a place to sit, gives some shade. I feel like it’s actually going to be used fairly often because people go down there quite a bit. It’s a great place for families.” The project got off to a great start when Oxford went to Sliters Lumber and Building
