DENVER — A man was shot and killed after exchanging gunfire with Jefferson County deputies in the Conifer area Wednesday, according to the sheriff's office. No deputies were injured.

The incident occurred near Callae Drive and Piano Meadows Drive, according to a 1:44 p.m. tweet from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff's office said the man was shot after firing upon deputies with a shotgun. They said there is no threat to the public.

According to public information officer Jacki Kelley with the sheriff's office, deputies were responding to the area after a 911 call concerning a possibly suicidal man.

"As we got to the scene and stepped out of our vehicles we heard a gunshot. As we continue to search that area for where we thought the gunshot was coming from, which was outside of the house, we did come across a male with a gun," Kelley said.

She said deputies negotiated with the man for more than two hours, hoping to come to a safe resolution.

"At some point, he did put the shotgun down on the ground. And when he did that, a couple of our deputies used less than lethal rounds and struck the suspect," she said. "The suspect immediately picked the gun back up, pointed it at our deputies and fired the shotgun. We returned fire hitting the suspect and killing him on scene."

Kelley said it was unclear what relationship the 911 caller had with the suicidal man whose identity has not been released.
