Security guard at homeless shelter in serious condition after stabbing

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – One person was hospitalized after a stabbing at a homeless shelter in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood Thursday night.

According to Columbus police, the stabbing happened at approximately 8:10 p.m. on East 8th Avenue at the Faith Mission homeless shelter. Police say the suspect, 51-year-old Robert Atkinson, was upset after being denied a place to stay.

Atkinson reportedly took out a knife from his backpack while arguing with a security guard at the shelter, and stabbed him several times. Atkinson remained at the scene and was arrested. He is scheduled to appear in Franklin County Municipal Court on Saturday.

The victim was taken to Grant Medical Center and listed in serious condition.
