Kirk Herbstreit’s son, Zak, was hospitalized on Tuesday with what appears to be a heart issue.
Zak, son of the leading ESPN college football analyst, is a junior tight end at Ohio State after joining the program as a preferred walk-on in June 2021.
Kirk shared a message on Twitter from his son after the news broke.
“I have had a bit of a setback these past couple of weeks. Not feeling right,” Zak Herbstreit said.
“I have some of the best cardiologists looking after me, and I am beyond appreciative. We are doing a number of tests and conjuring a plan to ensure that I will be able to be back to feeling normal again. I appreciate the overwhelming support over the past couple of days”
Zak is currently being treated at OSU’s Wexner Medical Center and said he is “feeling good and hope to be out of the hospital soon.”
The OSU football account retweeted Zak’s statement and said “Buckeye nation is with you.”
According to ABC 6, officials said Zak was in stable condition.
“His family is with him and appreciate everyone’s concerns and prayers,” Herbstreit said to ABC 6.
Zak has a long lineage of Buckeyes in the family with his dad and grandfather both serving as captains for the football team during their respective tenures.
His mom, Alison, was a cheerleader for the Buckeyes.
Herbstreit’s two other sons, Jake and Tye, both walked on at Clemson.
Tye, a receiver, completed his fourth season at Clemson and graduated this year.
Jake played two seasons with the Tigers but transferred to Ohio State, leaving his collegiate football career behind.
