Second suspect in serious assault on 2-year-old girl now in police custody

A man who is accused of harming a 2-year-old girl in his care, causing significant and long-term injuries, is now in police custody.

Clayton Burks, 34, was arrested on Sunday, according to Franklin County jail records.

According to Franklin County Municipal Court records, Burks and 30-year-old Angel Foster-Burks, are charged with child endangerment in connection with the girl's injuries.

Around 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 4, the girl had been taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital in cardiac arrest. The investigation into how she sustained the injuries was initially led by homicide detectives because it was not believed the girl would survive. The abuse was determined to have occurred at the couple's home on the 300 block of Glenwood Avenue in Franklinton.

Court records described "abusive head trauma," multiple brain bleeds, bruising to multiple parts of her face and her back and knees. The injuries are expected to have long-term complications for her as she matures.

"Evidence suggested Mr. Burks caused the abuse while Ms. Foster-Burks was a passive participant," court records state.

The police affidavit filed with the charging documents listed Foster-Burks and Burks as the child's foster parents; however, Franklin County Children Services said Foster-Burks was the "legal custodian" of the girl, which is different than being a foster parent.

There were several other children in the home in Franklinton, believed to be the girl's siblings, who were removed and placed elsewhere.

Foster-Burks was arrested in March and is currently out on bond pending trial, which is scheduled for June 29.

Burks' bond was set at $200,000 during an appearance in Franklin County Municipal Court on Monday.

Police arrest suspect in shooting at vigil that injured three

Columbus police also arrested a man accused of shooting and injuring three women who were attending a vigil outside an apartment in South Franklinton.

Sagittarius Lamar, 30, is facing three counts of felonious assault in connection with the Saturday morning shooting.

Police said the three victims, all women in their 20s, were participating in a vigil for a friend who had recently died outside an apartment on the 700 block of Canonby Place. Around 3:20 a.m. Saturday, Lamar reportedly leaned out the window of an apartment and fired multiple shots toward the gathered group.

The three women were all taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition but were later upgraded and are all expected to survive.

Lamar's bond was set at $1 million during an appearance in Franklin County Municipal Court on Monday.
