The Columbus Division of Police said the shooting happened at the store located at 1745 Morse Road.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police identified a man who was fatally shot by an armed security guard during an attempted robbery at a Kroger Thursday night.

Police said officers were called to the north Columbus grocery store on Morse Road around 10:15 p.m. for a reported shooting.

According to police, a fight started inside the store over someone cutting in line and the security guard told the men involved in the altercation to go outside.

One of the men involved in the fight went back inside to pay for his groceries. When he came back out, police said the other men in the fight tried to rob him at gunpoint. One of the accused robbers was 19-year-old Juan Cuarenta, according to police.

Police said one of the accused robbers fired shots, then the security guard fired his gun, wounding Cuarenta. Police did not say if it was Cuarenta or the other man who fired shots first.

Cuarenta was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital and pronounced dead at 11:12 p.m.

About 10 shots were fired in the parking lot, according to police.

The second suspect involved in the incident ran away and his identity is unknown.

Detectives took several people to police headquarters for questioning. Police have not said if charges will be filed in the shooting.
