The scoreboard at St. John Arena has seen its final day. Ohio State removed the 14,000-pound structure, which was installed by the Whiteway Sign Company in 1987, this week. Per Ohio State, the lack of athletic competitions at the venue negated the need for the scoreboard, which had not been fully operational.

This past men’s basketball season was one most Buckeye fans would rather forget. And perhaps many already have. But if anyone needed reminding, here’s a brief refresher: Ohio State’s 16-19 record represented its fewest wins and worst winning percentage in 19 years. The Buckeyes’ nine-game, monthlong losing streak was their longest since 1997-98, which was also the last time the program had a worse regular-season conference win percentage. Not to mention, Ohio State missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Thad Matta’s final season at the helm of the program in 2016-17.

Ohio State’s most quietly important position battle might be the one happening on special teams. The kicker competition hasn’t gotten nearly the attention as Ohio State’s more prominent position battles at quarterback, along the offensive line and in the secondary, but Buckeye fans learned all too well about the importance of the kicking game in last year’s Peach Bowl. And even though Noah Ruggles missed his final kick in that game, he leaves big shoes to fill as the only kicker in Ohio State history (minimum 20 attempts) to make more than 90 percent of his field goal attempts in his Buckeye career.
