MARATHON TWP. (WWJ) -- A child has died after apparently drowning in a pond in a residential area in Lapeer County.

The child was discovered late Tuesday afternoon in Columbiaville, a village located within Marathon Township, northeast of Flint.

According to the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded at around 5:10 p.m. to a call from a home on Pyles Road about an 8-year-old child who was not breathing after being pulled from a pond.

Life savings efforts were started on the scene and were continued by Marathon Township First Responders and Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service en- route to the hospital, officials said.

Tragically, the child was pronounced dead in the McLaren Lapeer Region emergency room.

"This appears to be a tragic incident and heartfelt condolences are extended to the family," sheriff's officials said, in a statement.

It's unclear who was supposed to be watching the child at the time, and other details about what led up to the drowning are unclear.

The child's name was not immediately released.
