Mizzou fires baseball coach Steve Bieser after seven seasons

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The national search for a new Mizzou baseball coach is on. MU Athletics fired head coach Steve Bieser, after seven seasons in Columbia, on Sunday afternoon.

The department said that the terms of Bieser's contract, which runs through July of 2024, will still be honored.

Bieser just wrapped up his seventh and final season at the helm of Tiger baseball. His all-time record at Mizzou is 188-155-1. In 2023, MU recorded a 30-24 overall mark and a 10-20 mark in SEC action. The Tigers did qualify for the team's first conference tournament since 2019, but fell out in the first round against Auburn.

Mizzou baseball has not made an NCAA Tournament since 2012, before Bieser became head coach.

"Baseball is important to our University, our conference, and our state," Athletics Director Desiree Reed-Francois said in a press release. "We understand the vital role baseball plays, and we are committed to further increasing our investment in the program and look forward to future successes. We will work quickly and expeditiously to find the candidate who is the best fit to return Mizzou Baseball to the national stage."

Bieser took the helm after Mizzou moved on from Hall of Fame coach Tim Jamieson. However, before his time in Columbia, Bieser coached briefly at Southeast Missouri State, where he won two conference coach of the year awards.

In a press release, Bieser said he is appreciative of the opportunity Mizzou gave him years sago.

"We have faced many challenges along the way, but the bottom line is we just didn't win enough games in this tough and rugged conference," he said. "I want to thank all of the players that I have had a great opportunity to coach. You've always represented this program in a first-class manner and I'm proud of you. I wish our current players great success and I will be pulling for you. God has a different plan for me. Keep representing the C2E way."
