Colorado Springs brewery holds fundraiser for family of late Fountain police officer

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A Colorado Springs brewery hosted a fundraiser over the weekend for the family of a Fountain officer who died last month.

Urban Animal Beer Company donated 20 percent of sales earned Sunday to the family of Officer Julian Becerra. This is the second fundraiser the brewery has held for his family.

Becerra, a K-9 officer for the Fountain Police Department, lost his life in early February after falling 40 feet off a bridge on South Academy. The fall happened during a police chase involving three carjacking suspects. He suffered grave injuries but held on for the next several days before passing away in the hospital on Feb. 11.

A number of community members, including brewery regulars and even members with the Fountain Police Department, showed up Sunday for a few beers and offer support for the Becerra family.

“It’s community coming together to support those who really need it and it’s heartwarming ... it’s really heartwarming,” Tabitha Frazer, an employee at Urban Animal, said about the turnout Sunday.

According to employees, the owner of Urban Animal’s sister works with the Colorado Springs Police Department, so when an opportunity presented itself to raise money for Becerra’s family, it was a no-brainer.

“It’s great. You know, we really support first responders and our military and all that, so it’s really great,” bartender Ashley Hall said about the fundraiser itself.
