HOWARD COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch in effect until 9:00 p.m. for the following areas in Texas: Borden County, Glasscock County, Howard County, Mitchell County, Reagan County, and Scurry County. This included the cities of Big Lake, Big Spring, Colorado City, Gail, Garden City, and Snyder.

What’s the difference between a watch and a warning?

Tornado watches and tornado warnings have different purposes. A tornado watch is typically issued hours in advance if conditions are ideal for a tornado to form. A watch will not necessarily result in severe weather. If there is a watch in your area, you should keep an eye on weather alerts and be prepared to act.

Preparing for a tornado is important because they are dangerous, and they can form anywhere and anytime without notice. Weather experts suggest building an emergency kit containing non-perishable food, water, batteries, a flashlight, first-aid kit, and a battery-operated radio. It is also important to know your community’s warning system and stay tuned to your local news for updates on a storm.

There are some signs to watch for that could indicate a tornado has formed: dark green clouds, large hail, and loud noises similar to that of a freight train. If you suspect a tornado is coming, head to a safe place such as an interior closet. Corners, doors, and rooms with outside walls are places you should try and avoid if possible.

A tornado warning means that either a tornado has been spotted or a radar has picked one up.

If you are in an area with a tornado warning, it’s time to act; get to a safe space such as a storm shelter. If you don’t have one, the best option is usually in the basement or the middle of a building, away from windows, and in an area with reinforced walls.
