Low-vision campers get chance to experience ice fishing at Camp Daggett
Snowy roads didn’t stop a group from the Grand Rapids-based Opportunities Unlimited for the Blind from enjoying a wintry weekend Up North. The campers spent some time at Camp Daggett Feb. 21-22 to get the chance to experience ice fishing, snowshoeing and other winter fun for the first time. According to their website, Opportunities Unlimited for the Blind’s mission is “building life skills, self-confidence and independence for children and young adults who are blind or have low vision.” “We run summer camps in Grand Rapids for kids who are blind or have low vision,” said camp director Aric Wallace. “We teach them things about daily living skills, cleaning skills. We really focus on cooking because for someone who can’t see, cutting can be a struggle.” This year is the second time Opportunities Unlimited for the Blind has journeyed north for a winter excursion to Camp Daggett. Gwen Botting, executive director for the nonprofit, was already familiar with the area through her work as former president of Michigan Parents of Children with Visual Impairments. “We would stay at a lodge … near Walloon Lake so that we could go to Challenge Mountain,” she said. “And we did that for a number

Vessel-themed exhibit now on display at Holland Area Arts Council
A new exhibit featuring top artists from across West Michigan is on display in the Padnos Gallery at the Holland Area Arts Council . The invitational exhibition, centered on the theme of vessels, showcases work from roughly a dozen artists in various mediums — including ceramics, glass, wood, woven materials and fabric, according to a community announcement. The exhibit, in part organized by Freedom Village resident Patricia "Pat" Flynn, will remain on display through March 14. Flynn, a watercolor artist since 2001, is an active member of the Holland Area Arts Council’s afternoon painting group on Wednesdays, according to the announcement. She previously served on the organization's board. During her involvement, the organization hosted the Patricia Flynn Watercolor Invitational, which led to the tradition of hosting a themed biannual invitational with work from regional artists. This year's theme was inspired by a similar show held nearly a decade ago that Flynn found compelling, according to the announcement. “Pat exemplifies what it means to stay actively engaged in your passions,” wrote Freedom Village Executive Director Russ Turecky. “Her creativity and commitment to the local arts community are inspiring, and we’re proud to see her help bring this meaningful exhibit to life.”
