2nd graders at a local school met their pen pals for the first time.
And these aren't just any pen pals, they are veterans.
It was a very touching moment for both the children and the veterans, happening on the anniversary of one of the most memorable days in American military history – D-Day.
Friendships on paper turned to friendships forever this afternoon at Coloma Elementary.
This all started last Veterans Day when these 2nd graders started sending notes to veterans.
Some turned out to be more than just pen pals.
“I got Brooklynn's letter on a bad day and it she just put a big smile on my face. It was a special day and we've gotten pretty close, and she writes all the time and I enjoy writing her back,” said William "Bo" Bohannon.
This program is a part of S.A.V.E. which stands for Students and Veterans Engaging. It’s a way for these 2nd graders to practice writing and meet their heroes.
Something that puts a smile on the faces of brave men and women who served our country.
“Today 79 years ago was D-Day. I did not even realize that no. That is amazing. I did not know that. So yeah, having it on this day is pretty spectacular,” said Valerie Krieger, teacher.
Veterans from three different states attended, meeting kids that they’ve been interacting with for the last 7 months.
Many pen pals plan to stay in contact as summer vacation starts next week.
The kids' faces lit up when they met their heroes.
