Maryland dominates in second half to beat Notre Dame 76-59

The Maryland Terrapins return to the Elite Eight for the eighth time with a big 76-59 win Saturday over No. 3 Notre Dame.| LINK: Live StatsThe game was tied at 44 at 4:16 in the third quarter -- and Maryland dropped the hammer from there, finishing the game on a 32-15 run.Maryland advances to the Elite Eight (Monday at 7 p.m.) to face the undefeated No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks, which defeated No. 4 UCLA Saturday afternoon, 59-43.First QuarterSenior Faith Masonius got Maryland on the board first as the Terps put pressure on Notre Dame to start the game Saturday morning.With 4:44 left in the first quarter, Notre Dame went scoreless for two and a half minutes and took a timeout, trailing the Terps by three. Notre Dame then went on a 13-0 run to take the lead halfway through the quarter -- neither senior Diamond Miller or sophomore Shyanne Sellers scored for Maryland in that time.Senior Abby Meyers would break the scoreless run with a three-pointer as the Terps trailed by five, and sophomore Shyanne Sellers closed in, drawing a foul and making her free throws.Then, with 1:18 left to go, Miller scored her first basket of the half, sinking a three-pointer on a Meyers assist.Maryland had five turnovers in the second quarter and the defense finally made some shots the final three minutes of the half. The Terps closed in at the half on a 12-5 run, but Notre Dame kept the lead, 32-31. Meyers leads the Terps with 9 points, Alexander has 8.Third QuarterThe Terps opened the third quarter with a Sellers layup to retake the lead and Notre Dame turned it over three times in the first two minutes. Miller's jumper at 4:44 was good, putting Maryland up by two.Sellers and Miller -- who finished with a combined 17 points in the quarter -- took over for Maryland as the Terps worked to extend its lead on a 9-0 run with two minutes left before Notre Dame took another timeout. The Terps outscored the Irish by 10 in the first seven and a half minutes.Late into the quarter, Notre Dame's Kylee Watson and Lauren Ebo each had four fouls. And, the third quarter ended with a big Terps lead, 57-45.Fourth QuarterHalfway through the fourth quarter, Maryland was on a 27-9 run as Notre Dame went 1-10 over the last 10 field goal attempts. Notre Dame's foul trouble sank the Irish as Maryland remained far more balanced and defensively tormenting the Irish, forcing 23 turnovers so far.Sellers and Miller finished with a combined 29 second half points. Sellers finished with 18 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Miller finished with 18 pts, two assists and five rebounds. Meyers finished with 11 points, one assist and two rebounds.
