Sierra snow levels could drop to 8,000 feet during this week's storm
More snow could be on the way to the northern Sierra Nevada this week, bringing an early taste of winter to the region. Precipitation is expected Tuesday through Thursday throughout the region, with snow levels dropping as low as 8,000 feet Wednesday night, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service . That would bring snow to some of the Sierra's highest peaks, including Freel Peak (10,881 feet), Mount Rose (10,776 feet), Jobs Peak (10,633 feet) and Slide Mountain (9,702 feet). That's roughly in line with typical years, which see the first measurable Sierra snowfall in October. The storm system could hinder travel on State Route 431 over Mount Rose Summit (8,946 feet) and State Route 88 over Carson Pass (8,573 feet). With an elevation of 7,056 feet, Interstate 80 over Donner Pass likely would stay snow-free, according to the forecast. Rain expected in northwestern Nevada valleys Rain could spoil the commute between Tuesday evening and Thursday evening, and potentially leave some icy windshields on Friday morning.
