Cougars push past Wolverines for season sweep

COLEMAN — Fourth-inning magic conjured up by the Coleman High School baseball team gave the Cougars a 5-3 triumph over Crivitz in Marinette and Oconto Conference action on Friday.

Friday’s win secures Coleman’s season sweep of the Wolverines and gives the Cougars a two-game lead over Crivitz in the race for the M&O Conference championship.

Down 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars strapped on their rally caps and went to work, with Karson Risner and Logan Lamine coming around to score on a two-run single from Gavin Pusick, who scored a run himself thanks to a wild pitch by Tegan Werner.

Brady Dufeck chipped in a ribbie of his own to plate Kollin Peters and put Coleman on top by two.

Lamine wrapped up Coleman’s victory by retiring nine of the next 11 batters that he faced, with only a single by Stephen Allard and an error that allowed JJ Brand to reach base the only blemishes.

Despite coming out on the wrong end of the score in the end, it was Crivitz that drew first blood after Logan Marvin scored Werner and Brand with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first.

An error in the second allowed Walter Laguna Herrera to score and push the Wolverines’ lead up to 3-0 before Coleman got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with an RBI base knock compliments of Wyatt Bieber.

Hits were nearly even between the two rivals, with the Cougars holding a slim 8-6 edge, although Coleman committed six errors compared to three for the Wolverines.

Lamine was the winning pitcher after throwing all seven innings and allowing six hits and one earned run to pair with a walk and six strikeouts.

Werner was saddled with the loss on the mound with eight hits, five runs (two earned), two walks and two strikeouts over six innings pitched.

Werner and Colten Tarmann both had two-hit afternoons for Crivitz.

Logan Kurth had two hits for Coleman, both of them doubles.
