UPDATE: Suspect in the murder of Hailey Nieto arrested

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - MARCH 31 UPDATE: A suspect has been arrested in the murder of 18-year-old Hailey Nieto.

39-year-old Todd Tonnochy was arrested on Tuesday by U.S. Marshals.

During their investigation, detectives believed Tonnochy fled the area shortly after Nieto’s murder. On March 27, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office requested the support of U.S. Marshals in apprehending him.

On March 28, Tonnochy, with the assistance of the Midland County Sheriff’s Office, was located at a motel in Midland, Texas where he was taken into custody.

The WCSO says there are no outstanding suspects in the case.

“On behalf of the members of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, I want to extend our deepest condolences to Hailey’s family, friends, and loved ones,” said WCSO Sheriff Darin Balaam.

“I am extremely proud of the tenacity of the men and women of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office for their diligent work on this case. This could not have happened without the swift collaboration and assistance from our partners with the Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, the United States Marshal’s Lonestar Fugitive Task Force, the Midland County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and SWAT team, and the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division.”

MARCH 28 UPDATE: Secret Witness is offering a reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect(s) involved in the murder of 18-year-old Hailey Nieto.

Nieto was found in the area N. Virginia Street between Red Rock Road and White Lake Parkway in Reno on March 23.

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office announced her identity Monday and said her cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.

MARCH 27 UPDATE: A body found in Cold Springs has been identified and a cause of death has been determined, the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office announced Monday.

18-year-old Hailey Nieto was identified as the decedent.

The medical examiner’s office says she was killed by a gunshot wound to the head and that the manner of death was homicide.

Nieto was a mother of two. A gofundme page has been set up for her family.

MARCH 25 UPDATE: The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office now asks for the public’s help as it investigates a dead body found Thursday off the dirt extension of North Virginia Street near Cold Springs.

Anyone who may have been in the area between Red Rock Road and White Lake Parkway near the railroad tracks between 5 a.m. and noon on Thursday is asked to call detectives at 775-328-3320.

MARCH 24 UPDATE: The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office says its investigation relates to a death in the area.

They say that on March 23 around 6:00 p.m., WCSO deputies responded to the area for reports of suspicious circumstances.

After they arrived, they found a dead body off the dirt extension of North Virginia Street between Red Rock Road and White Lake Parkway.

The Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office is currently completing the investigation, and the body has yet to be identified.

The dirt extension where the body was found will only be open for residential traffic until the Sheriff’s Office has completed their on-scene investigation. They say they will provide more information when it becomes available.

Washoe County Search and Rescue, Hasty and Incident Management team are assisting WCSO detectives with the investigation.
