Coconut Creek High School’s track and field team has triumphantly reclaimed their spot in the State Championship, marking their return to the prestigious event after a three-year absence.
On May 19, the Cougars had their 4 x 100 relay team consisting of Jermaine Gordon, Godson Sinelien, Joshua Yearby, and Hyajah Miller place 18th with a time of 43:16. The group, which consisted of three seniors, had a historic year finishing third in Districts and then in sixth in Regionals.
Coconut Creek was also well-represented on the 3A top 100 conference rankings. Despite not qualifying for states, the boys had two relay teams in the top-25, with Hyajah Miller finishing 29th in the 400 meters and Gordon coming in 38th in the 100 meters. Godson Sinelin went in the top 100 in three different events, including the javelin, 200 meters, and 100 meters. Elijah Cannon also placed in the long jump at 93rd, while the 4 x 800 relay team shined this year.
The girls also had a pair of relay teams rank in the top 40, while the 4 x 800 relay team placed 89th. Individually, Selene Adams came in 55th in the 200 meters and 80th in the 100 meters, while Kahila Exatus placed in both the 100 and 400 hurdles. Beriah Fevrier, Jayda Washington and Amir Robillard were all recognized for finishing in the top 100.
