On this day in 1968, a tornado touched down southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. It was the second of just three tornadoes reported in Alaska since 1950. In 1963, The final flight of Project Mercury launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. During that flight, pilot L. Gordon Cooper conducted 11 experiments and took photographs of the Earth. He even transmitted slow-scan black and white television images back to the Mercury Control Center at Cape Canaveral, the first TV transmission from an American crewed spacecraft. Cooper orbited the earth 22 times and spend 34 hours and 20 minutes in space, the longest space flight at that time. Although plans called for Cooper to sleep as much as eight hours, he slept only intermittently during portions of the flight.

Brevard County voters will have a say in only three of the eight local judicial races this year as five of the Space Coast races went uncontested. The qualifying period to run for judge closed on April 26, resulting in County Judges Thomas Brown and Katie Jacobus along with Circuit Judges Charlie Crawford, Jigisia Patel-Dookhoo and Kathryn M. Speicher essentially being reelected to the bench.

A long-running dispute between Rockledge Drive residents and Brevard County over pruning oak trees lining the scenic road came to a head Monday. After years of controversy, county workers arrived to begin trimming branches, despite objections from local activists.
