Ahhhh... A cooler, comfortable week ahead
After more than a week of obnoxious heat and humidity, we’re finally getting some relief. Temperatures will cool off into the upper 70s and low 80s through Thursday with noticeably lower humidity, which means comfortable nights for opening the windows and letting some fresh air blow through the house. Enjoy it while it lasts, because the heat and humidity will be back by the weekend.

After days of haze, Monday's rain clears the air
Faribault, and most of Minnesota, will see a ‘reprieve’ from the Canadian fire smoke blanketing the Midwest this week, according to National Weather Service forecaster Mike Griesinger. But the hazy conditions will likely return and affect the state through summer and fall. “For a while here we are in good shape,” the forecaster said. “The biggest problem we’re going to have for the moment are certainly the Boundary Water fires, but the Northwest Ontario fires have settled down.” Since early-July large fires have ravaged northeast Minnesota creating the thick smokey air that has passed through the state. Air quality conditions have ranged from moderate to unhealthy the last week across the state, but after the heavy rainfall Monday morning the conditions are now good in Faribault. “We hadn’t really had any rain for 10 days or something like that, so we never had a chance to kind of clean out the existing pollutants in the atmosphere,” Griesinger said. “The rain helps scrub the atmosphere and clean out the smoke, and even gives you a reprieve from the other pollutants in the air too.” The rest of the week is projected to be dry, which Griesinger said may worsen air conditions

About 800 customers were without power in Northfield, Dundas as heat wave arrives
A few more than 800 homes and businesses were without power as a heat wave impacted the Northfield and Dundas areas during peak hours Wednesday. Due to heat indices up to 100 and high humidity, the National Weather Service issued a daylong extreme heat warning, which ended at 9 p.m. Wednesday. Earlier that day, during peak usage hours, about 800 customers were without power, but Xcel Energy restored power with a few hours. "We thank those in the community for their patience during that outage, as we know they depend on the energy for air conditioning and other needs on days like these," Xcel spokesperson Kevin Coss said. "Our crews will be quick to respond to any other outages that may occur." The rest of the week wasn't as hot, though a heat advisory continued through Thursday evening. The high is reached about 91 degrees Fahrenheit. Friday was a few degrees higher still. The weekend and early next week is forecasted in the upper-80s and lower-90s. The city of Northfield designates several cooling centers for residents needing refuge from the heat. Xcel has temporarily suspended service disconnections for nonpayment during extreme heat. "Affected customers will receive a text message and/or

Dangerous heat continues as wildfire smoke drifts south
Our dangerously hot, humid stretch of weather will continue through the end of the week, with highs in the upper 80s to 90s and heat index values approaching 100 degrees for the fourth straight day. Wildfire smoke from northern Minnesota could also drift into parts of the region, especially in areas north and east of the Mankato/North Mankato area. Rain chances will remain near zero across southern Minnesota and northern Iowa through the weekend before a gradual pattern change begins early next week.

Heat and humidity continue to climb with no relief until the weekend
The dangerous heatwave gripping the region will continue through the end of the workweek, with highs in the mid 90s and heat index values near 100° each afternoon. Some locations could briefly climb into the lower 100s. Nighttime will bring very little relief, with temperatures only dropping into the upper 60s and low to mid 70s. Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories remain in effect across parts of the region, and some of those alerts may eventually need to be extended into Friday.

Tropical heatwave to last all week, slightly cooler by the weekend
The heatwave gripping the region will show no signs of letting up this week, with highs in the low to mid 90s and heat index values pushing 100° through at least Thursday. Nighttime won’t bring much relief either, with temperatures only dropping into the upper 60s to low 70s. Because of the multi-day duration of this heat, an Excessive Heat Warning is in effect through Thursday evening for locations along and north of the Minnesota River, including Redwood Falls, New Ulm, Mankato and points north. Rain chances remain essentially nonexistent through the rest of the week, though a slight cooldown and a small uptick in shower and thunderstorm chances will arrive by Friday into the weekend.

Severe storms today, a comfy break, then the heat returns
Another round of thunderstorms is possible this evening, with the greatest severe weather threat focused south and east of the Mankato/North Mankato area. After today’s storms move out, we’ll get a much-needed break from both the rain and the humidity. Thursday and Friday will bring a couple of cooler, more comfortable summer days with lower humidity, light wind and highs generally in the low to upper 80s. After that brief break, our attention quickly turns to the heat as temperatures begin climbing this weekend and a much hotter pattern develops early next week.
