The Fire Beneath Our Feet
Centralia became an attraction for both horror movie fans and ordinary people fascinated by the story. I first learned the story of Centralia, Pennsylvania as a child, driving in my parents’ car through the mountains beyond the Blue Ridge. The fire had been making national news for several years, and a documentary appeared on PBS in 1982, which must have when my parents told us the story. Fascinated, my brother and I scanned the hills for smoke. I don’t know how close we actually were to the town on that drive, but to us it seemed that the fire could spread, could appear anywhere, connected by the vast seams of anthracite coal. The vast underground caverns I imagined while playing Dungeons and Dragons were real, and maybe the fires of hell, too.
Danville SPCA offers reduced adoption fees this weekend
Danville, Pa. — Several SPCA locations will be offering a reduced adoption fee this weekend. The BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization, has sponsored select SPCA locations for a special "Empty the Shelters" event on May 11. Philadelphia, Danville, and Lancaster SPCAs are participating in the event. During this event, all animals over the age of six months old will have their adoption fee reduced to $10. As the nation’s largest funded adoption event, “Empty the Shelters” has helped nearly 140,000 pets find loving homes. During each nationwide event, BISSELL Pet Foundation sponsors reduced adoption fees to make adoption more affordable for prospective pet owners.
