Fatal Pettis County accident leads to misdemeanor charge for Illinois teen

Robin Wallace leaves behind a husband an four daughters.

UPDATE:  According to the probable cause statement, Wallace’s light had changed to green right before she pulled out onto Highway 65.  The responding trooper says Stewart, for some unknown reason, failed to observe her light turn to red and struck Wallace’s driver’s side door.

Court records state a subsequent investigation showed Stewart failed to observe a warning light, failed to stop for the steady red signal, and was traveling in excess of the posted speed limit.

An Illinois teen is now charged for her involvement in a fatal crash in Pettis County.

Maggie Stewart, 19, of Coal City, Illinois, was driving northbound on Highway 65 just north of Sedalia on May 6 when the accident occurred.  The patrol reports Robin Wallace, 60, of Sedalia, was attempting to turn off of Rebar Road onto southbound Highway 65 when she was struck by Stewart’s pickup truck.

Wallace was life-flighted to a Columbia hospital where she died.  Stewart wasn’t injured.

On Wednesday, Stewart was charged with operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner, involving an accident.  The charge is a misdemeanor.Â
